4 days family cycling holiday on Zanzibar

This family cycling holiday on Zanzibar has shorter daily distances to make it work for the whole family. We also added some extra activities with the children in mind. The lodges are soulful and child friendly, as are the tours along the way.

If the family only want to cycle just for a day, check out our Spice tour on bike.

    Day 2: Kizimkazi

Three Zanzibar villages in a day

Todays family cycling is 23 km before arriving to the South West of Zanzibar, Kizimkazi. The stretch is chunked up along the way to discover both the villages of Jambiani and Makunduchi. Jambiani is white sanded and with coral rocks. Makunduchi is lush and green with red soil, banana forests and big mango trees- like you picture when thinking of Africa. We do multiple stops to try fruit and local specialties and take our time to discover Zanzibar.

After checking in to Karamba Resort in Kizimkazi you embark Mimi the dhow. Mimi will take you around the bay for swimming and diving from the boat. After lunch onboard we go back in time to have a shower before the sunset over Indian Ocean.

Kizimkiazi is a fishing village and here often the big fish, tuna, marlin etc, are caught. There is a chance to see the fish auction in the village tide permitting.

We love Karamba Resort because of its amazing location facing the horizon and the sunset. The pool is surrounded by flowers and plants and overlooks the Ocean.

    Day 3: Stone Town

Rain forest and sunset over Stone Town

After breakfast overlooking the horizon we bike to Jozani Forest ( 26 km). It is on the tar road- a green stretch passing several villages. Along the way we will find fruit and other local specialities to try. If too tough biking you can always jump on the local bus. In Jozani Forest you walk in the dense rain forest to spot the Red Colobus Monkeys. After the Jozani Forest we take a local bus, with bikes and all, and get off in Stone Town checking in at The Seyyida Family room.

Stone Town is a special place. Even UNESCO thinks so as they made it a world heritage site. The mix of Swahili, Indian and Arabic cultures is evident as you walk the swirling and narrow streets. There the people live their lives on display. Drinking coffee, chatting, even cooking.

18.00 Sunset dinner Emerson on Hurumzi. This is the best located roof top in Stone Town with stunning sea view. At 18.30 the sun cast shadows over Stone Towns roof as the sun sets over the horizon. The call for prayers reach up to your roof top from all over town and down the Shiva temple calls its members.

Sunset and drinks around 18, dinner at 19 excl. drinks

We love the spacious comfy family room at The Seyyida Hotel. More too love is the pool and the lovely roof top terrace overlooking the promenade, harbor and horizon. This makes your breakfast extra enjoyable. Seyyida´s location is perfect if wanting to stroll along the Ocean walk or discover more of Stone Town. Children are playing just outside the entrance- maybe the kids will be invited for a football game.

    Day 4: Chuini

To avoid the erratic traffic around Stone Town you take a local bus up to Kianga in the Spice Farm area. A short 2 km cycling to reach Abeids Family Farm. Here you will see, smell and taste all fruit and spice in season. Coriander, tamarind, chili, vanilla, cardamom, turmeric, lemon grass, cloves, ylang ylang, cumin, cinnamon, nutmeg, garlic, pepper , oregano, ginger and many others. After the tour you will have a local very tasty meal cocked using vegetables from the family farm.

The last cycling of the day (6 km) goes to Chuini for overnight at Mangrove Lodge. This sustainable lodge is surrounded by mangrove forest and mango trees. And there is a beautiful ruin to visit by the sea.
